Practical bedroom renovation tips for Singapore homes — lighting choices, restful colour palettes, layered curtains, and warmer flooring options to consider.

The bedroom is probably the most important and sacred room in the home. It is the ultimate sanctuary away from day-to-day hassles and worries — a place to reconnect with yourself or your partner, to recharge and rejuvenate.

Tips on bedroom renovation

  • Bedroom lighting — an often overlooked part of bedroom design. Lighting plays an important role in creating the feel of the bedroom; a master bedroom and a study room should never have the same light settings. If you like to read in the bedroom, adequate reading light should be in place. The use of table and floor lamps, as well as candles, brings light to any part of the bedroom and adds a touch of class.
  • Bedroom colours — choose colours that are restful, relaxing, and neutral, and that work with everything else in the room. Strong colours such as red should be avoided unless you personally find them comforting. Designing your bedroom interior with a splash of bright colour will liven up a room, but it should not dominate. Always take into consideration what kind of mood the colours will bring for you and your spouse.
  • Bedroom curtains — choose layered curtains for the bedroom. This allows you to wake up to filtered light, black out the entire room for naps and daytime sleep, or open everything for full daylight. Blackout-lined draperies will protect you from the morning sun, while sheers or thin blinds filter light for a gentle glow. Bedroom interior design has many options and can be tailored to your personal preferences.
  • Bedroom flooring — ideally, the flooring in your bedroom should never be tile, marble, or granite, as these give an ice-cold feel in the morning when you wake. Wood or carpet are the recommended choices for bedrooms. Carpet is the warmest, but wood is also a popular choice. Either creates an overall warmer feel to the room.
